# The Power of Letting Go
We often find ourselves in situations where it feels easier, faster, or even safer to just do things ourselves. We understand the code, are familiar with the tools, and sometimes "it's just quicker if I do it."

There's a better way though, a way that not only gets the job done but also empowers our team and fosters individual growth. This quote resonates deeply with me; Marcus recognised his adoptive fathers' ability to spot individual strengths and create an environment where everyone can shine.
In software engineering, this means being comfortable delegating tasks, trusting our colleagues' abilities and providing them with the resources and support they need to succeed. It's often not easy, but as I've been told, "if it's easy, you're not learning".
The following are all ways that I believe you can embody this philosophy, most of which I'd admit to having failed to practise at one point or another:
* **Identify Strengths:** Seek out individual talents within the team, and use them effectively, but don't over-use them and stifle the opportunity for others to grow.
* **Provide Clear Guidance:** Provide context, along with clear instructions and expectations; always make time to answer questions and offer guidance throughout the process.
* **Praise Publicly:** Acknowledge the efforts of team members publicly, without attempting to take the lime light; it's not about you.
* **Deliver Constructive Feedback (Privately):** Avoid defensive responses by delivering clear and constructive feedback, in private; aim to help, not to hinder or discourage.
By consciously trying to "yield the floor", we can empower those around us, establish a culture of growth, and build stronger teams that ultimately deliver better results. And hopefully, those around us will return the favour when the time comes.
